Music

Immanuel is a joyful church seated high among the surrounding hills and valleys of Glencoe, a perfect site from which to pour forth great music. In truth, an essential element of Immanuel’s program of worship is its musical accompaniment to services, plus its annual concert series. The  church is modest in size but its choristers are well-trained, allowing the choir, composed of 11 professional and volunteer singers,  to embrace the musical offerings of a wide range of composers from the 16th to 20th centuries.

Immanuel Church has a magnificent new pipe organ (with English voicing) built by Casavant Freres, Saint Hyacinthe, Canada.

John Holland, Immanuel’s Organist-Choirmaster since 1994, is a product of Baltimore’s Peabody  Conservatory of Music, The Westminster Choir College, and the Royal School of Church Music, London.  John has been a guest organist at Washington National Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, and for several years was Assistant Organist at the Presidential Chapel, Camp David.

Immanuel’s congregation  is a singing congregation, and heartily joins the choir in singing the great hymns of the church.

The Immanuel Concert Series rounds out the church’s musical program, presenting five concerts a season (October through May). These include two Evensong services,  the Christmas Festival Of Lessons And Carols, and two other concerts. Past concerts have featured the Boston Woodwind Quintet and the Peabody Ragtime Ensemble.

The Immanuel Concert Series is funded by the Friends Of Music Of Immanuel Church.  Following each concert is a Royal Tea in the historic Rectory.
