Outreach at Immanuel

Our parishioners cherish the beauty and serenity of our secluded perch on top of a hill off a winding country road. However, our privileged location does not keep us from venturing out to do the world’s work that we, as Christians, are called upon to do.

Outreach has always been an integral part of Immanuel Church. From the very beginning in 1881, there has been a program to help needy local families. Now, while still helping people who live in our community, our prayers and support go further afield. Our little church often accomplishes big things—both financially and through hands-on projects. We have earned a reputation in the Diocese of taking on challenges which appear to be well beyond our modest means.

In our recent history, we have sponsored a refugee family from Poland, helped to renovate houses in Baltimore and Western Maryland and provided funding to furnish the facilities of Episcopal Community Services’ Collington Square Drug Re-Entry Program. We have also held large fundraisers to benefit Habitat for Humanity and Paul’s Place, a community outreach center in southwest Baltimore.

Current Outreach programs at Immanuel include:

  • Sparks Needy Families Fund
Donations are collected throughout the year to help local families with individual needs, including medical assistance, summer camps, school supplies, clothing, food, and Thanksgiving and Christmas gift certificates.
  • Paul’s Place—
Volunteers from Immanuel travel twice monthly to Pigtown in teams of three to help serve meals, often bringing salad sufficient to feed 200 people. They also transport bags of clothing and goods donated by parishioners, and participate in the annual Christmas Gift Shop at Paul’s Place.
  • Catonsville Children’s Home—
This Christmas project is sponsored by the Women of Immanuel who gather to wrap gifts purchased for teenage boys residing at the home. In addition to the gifts, they provide sufficient funds for the boys to enjoy a meal or night out with their counselors.
  • Special Offerings—
Collected at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter, each offering is sent to an organization designated by the Outreach Committee. In general, the committee tries to balance the needs in our community with needs in the world at large.
  • Special Projects—
Various groups in the congregation sponsor fundraising events. These include a Youth Group Crop Walk, a sale of African Crafts, an Art Show to benefit Paul’s Place and the Church School sponsorship of a young boy from an immigrant family in Texas through the Christian Children’s Fund.
  • Pastoral Care—
A dedicated group of Lay Visitors delivers the altar flowers every week to those who are ill or unable to attend church services. Children of the Church School travel several times a year to visit Broadmead, a nearby retirement community in our neighborhood. An annual Newcomers Breakfast is held to welcome those who have recently started to attend Immanuel Church.

We need pictures of our members doing outreach.

Pictures of as many of the 6 different types of outreach are needed.
